For those of you interested in a Lansinoh Breast Pump, you may have already noticed that there are two double electric breast pump options. The Lansinoh Double Electric Breast Pump and the Lansinoh Affinity Double Electric Breast Pump. Now there’s not a whole lot of clarification out there as to what the difference is between these two pumps, so I decided to write a little article and explain.
Lansinoh Double Electric Breast Pump
Lansinoh Double – Original
The Lansinoh Double is the original double electric breast pump by Lansinoh. It offers a piston-driven motor which allows for comfortable and efficient pumping. The pump unit offers built-in bottle holders and weighs as little as one pound. It offers Lansinoh’s patented closed system which prevents milk back up into the tubing and pump. You also get two separate dials for speed and suction. This Lansinoh Pump cycles 30 to 60 times per minute, and offers a suction range of 100 – 220 mmHG in 1 second. It also comes with two standard 25 mm breast flanges.
Lansinoh Affinity Double Electric Breast Pump
Lansinoh Affinity Double Electric Breast Pump
Now, the Lansinoh Affinity is the new and improved version of the original double electric breast pump. It offers many of the same features, including the patented closed system that prevents milk back flow, built in bottle holders, and two 25 mm breast flanges. The Lansinoh Affinity also offers individually adjustable cycle and suction buttons. So, what’s the difference?
First of all, the Lansinoh Affinity offers a feature called Custom Expression, which offers two pumping phases. The first is called the stimulation phase which consists of a short, fast sucking rhythm designed to simulate let-down. This phase automatically lasts 2 minutes, and then switches over to the expression phase, which consists of a slower, deeper sucking rhythm designed to express milk more efficiently. If you reach let-down before the 2 minutes is up, you can manually switch to the expression phase, and if you haven’t reached let-down by the end of the 2 minutes you can manually switch back to the stimulation phase with the push of a button.
The Lansinoh Affinity offers the same cycling speed range as the original, 30 to 60 cycles per minute. It also offers (+) and (-) buttons with 6 different cycle setting within that range. So when you hit the (+) button it takes you from 30 to 35, then from 35 to 40, all the way up to 60 CPM’s. The Lansinoh Double offers a dial that turns, which leads me to believe that you can turn it very slightly and go from 30 to say 32. That would mean that although both the Lansinoh Affinity and the original offer the same cycling speed range, you get more options with the original Lansinoh Breast Pump. The same goes when it comes to suction strength. The Lansinoh Affinity does offer a wider range of suction strength, from 50 – 250 mm HG, but it’s also controlled with (+) and (-) buttons, and there’s only 8 settings. It adjusts 25 mm HG with each setting, so when you hit the (+) button you go from 50 to 75. The Lansinoh Double offers a smaller range, from 100 – 220 mm HG, but it’s also controlled with a dial, allowing you more options. In other words, the Lansinoh Affinity offers a wider range of adjustment, but the Lansioh Double Breast Pump offers more setting options.
The only other difference between these two Lansinoh Breast Pumps are the breast flanges. Both double electric breast pumps offer standard 25 mm breast flanges, but the Lansinoh Affinity offers ComfortFit breast flanges. They have a special rubber on the outer rim that ensures a good seal, which helps with suction, and adds a little bit of cushion for comfort.
